Description

(September 2003) 12 tracks: The Goodman * The Daughter of Megan * Let Me Be * Cruel Words * The Blind Harper * The White Cockade * Young James * Falling Words and Music * Bring Me A Boat * Polly * Sweet William's Ghost * Underneath the Stars.

Kate Rusby’s pure Northern tones are well known now, and this album serves to show the breadth of her talent in composing and arranging as well as singing.

Five of the songs are Kate's own, and nine of the tunes * she has also augmented some of the traditional lyrics and melodies too, with a voice very much in the northern balladry style.

Kate’s arrangements are soft and gentle, as shown by the gorgeous flowing love song Underneath The Stars, with backing on cornet, Eflat horn, tuba, flugelhorn and euphonium from the Grimethorpe Colliery Band!

The album also features Ian Carr (guitar), Andy Cutting, Ewan Vernal (bass), Andy Seward, John McCusker (fiddle), James MacKintosh (percussion) and Michael McGoldrick (flute). Kate is also joined by singer Eddi Reader and Simon Fowler from the band Ocean Colour Scene.

"The finest female folk singer to hit the scene in two decades" (The Times)

"She's a great singer, not just a great folk singer" (The Guardian)

"Folk music does not get much cooler" (Q)

"The most beautiful voice in England" (The Guardian)
