An excellent debut album from Glasgow-based Gaelic singer Deirdre Graham.

This album showcases a series of traditional songs specially selected by Deirdre.

'Urranta' is a celebration of the Gaelic singing traditions and an expression of their reach across different musical worlds.

Musicians: Deirdre Graham (vocals), Angus Lyon (piano, keyboards), Seonaid Aitken (violin I), Kristan Harvey (violin II), Patsy Reid (viola), Alice Allen (cello), James Lindsay (double/electric bass, Moog), Ruairidh Graham (drums).

"The process of researching, selecting, recording and sharing these songs has been exceptionally humbling and has nourished my huge respect for all of the composers who were daring enough to confide their story in someone through song. The way those stories have moved through time, linking generations, fills me with pride. I am deeply grateful and honoured to be singing in a language that is so closely connected to history and place. These songs have become more than words – definition, syntax, vocabulary – wrapped around a rhyming scheme. They have become more, even, than fascinating stories. These songs are the legacy of our ancestors, and it is imperative that we all play a small part in this evolving ecosystem of tradition as we carry their voices forward." Deirdre Graham, Tracs.

"Deirdre's singing is always assured and has a rare clarity; she makes you hear songs in a different way." John Waltham, Living Tradition.

"...such is the craft and creation of this cleverly constructed and contemporary take on traditional songs, and hopefully their 2020 treatment will play its part in preserving these traditional songs." John Reed, Fatea Magazine.
